A new heavy steel fabricator is setting up in Ridgeville.
Carolina Heavy Steel LLC is investing $15 million and plans to create up to 50 jobs at 1002 Research Center Drive, Dorchester County Economic Development announced Sept. 9.
The company will process, fabricate and coat heavy steel for customers in the commercial, government and power generation industries, the county said. Its work will include CNC plasma cutting, machining, precision sawing, forming and rolling, fabrication and welding, abrasive blasting and industrial coating, taking projects from raw steel plate to finished pieces under one roof.
Equipment at the plant includes a 10-by-40-foot CNC plasma cutting table, an automatic vertical band saw, plate rolling and tandem press brake systems, hydraulic bending equipment, a large-component abrasive blast booth and a 20-by-20-by-60-foot industrial paint booth, according to the county.
“Carolina Heavy Steel was created to give customers a reliable, comprehensive source for heavy steel processing and fabrication,” said owner Dustin Corbin, a third-generation member of a family with more than six decades in the steel industry, according to the announcement.
“Carolina Heavy Steel is not simply bringing jobs to Dorchester County; it is bringing a specialized manufacturing operation that can support contractors, manufacturers and major industrial projects with more of their steel needs handled right here in our region,” said David Chinnis, chairman of Dorchester County Council.
Once fully operational, the company plans to employ up to 50 people in skilled steel trades, including processing, machining, forming, fabrication, welding, surface preparation and coating, the county said. The announcement did not give an opening date or say whether the project received incentives.
Research Center Drive in Ridgeville is also the address of one of Google’s two new Dorchester County data center campuses, a 230-acre site at No. 1055, according to Data Center Dynamics.
