Travelers and workers in North Charleston’s airport, hotel and shopping district have a new way to get around, and it costs nothing to ride.
The Charleston Area Regional Transportation Authority, known as CARTA, announced Tuesday the launch of the North Area Shuttle, or NASH. The route links area hotels, restaurants, stores and entertainment venues with Charleston International Airport, according to the announcement.
Service officially began Sunday, June 9, CARTA said.
The shuttle is free to riders through a partnership among the City of North Charleston, Boeing and the Charleston County Aviation Authority, according to the announcement.
NASH runs seven days a week on a looped route along International Boulevard with 16 stops. Stops include the airport, the North Charleston Coliseum, Boeing, hotels, retail shops and restaurants, CARTA said. Along the loop, the shuttle also serves other key points of interest, including the Performing Arts Center, Tanger Outlets and the SCRA Lowcountry Graduate Center, according to the announcement.
The route runs on hybrid buses, a first for CARTA’s system, according to the announcement.
CARTA calls the free shuttle the newest addition to its services. Officials cut the ribbon on one of the hybrid buses at a morning event in North Charleston.
The shuttle will also give Boeing South Carolina employees “an environmentally-friendly way of commuting to and from places of business on the shuttle route, all without adding traffic to the roads,” Willy Geary, Boeing South Carolina’s director of operations, said in the announcement.
