Costco now owns the land for a third warehouse in the Charleston area.
The Issaquah, Washington-based retailer bought a 29-acre tract in the Ingleside development in North Charleston for about $21.7 million, according to an Oct. 21 real estate filing reported by The Post and Courier. The deal closed the week before. The seller was a company affiliated with Daniel Island-based Weber USA Corp., which declined to comment to the newspaper.
The property sits along Interstate 26 at 9000 Blue House Road, near the new Weber Boulevard interchange, the newspaper reported.
As of Oct. 21, the store had not been added to Costco’s list of future locations. “We cannot comment on locations that will be opening more than three months from today,” the retailer says on its website, The Post and Courier reported. Costco has not announced an opening date.
What the plans show
The purchase follows a detailed site plan Costco filed in late June with the S.C. Department of Environmental Services. The plan shows a 181,000-square-foot building and a gas station with 32 pumps, The Post and Courier reported.
ABC News 4 also reported on the filing July 1. The station said then that a timeline for construction wasn’t available.
Talk of a North Charleston Costco had circulated for about a year before the purchase, after preliminary engineering documents made the rounds on social media, according to The Post and Courier.
The store would be Costco’s eighth in South Carolina. The others are in West Ashley, Mount Pleasant, Indian Land, Columbia, Greenville, Spartanburg and Myrtle Beach, ABC News 4 reported. The West Ashley warehouse is on Ashley Town Center Drive.
Why North Charleston
The Ingleside site would bring Costco closer to the region’s population growth corridor, including the large residential communities in the Goose Creek and Summerville areas, The Post and Courier reported.
It would also compete for memberships with two head-to-head rivals in the region, Sam’s Club at Tanger Outlets in North Charleston and BJ’s Wholesale Club in Summerville, according to the newspaper.
Costco is building a $240 million distribution center along Interstate 77 near Rock Hill as well. That facility will deliver imports and other goods to the North Charleston store and about 20 others in the Carolinas and Georgia, The Post and Courier reported.
A site with a past
The tract has been promised to a big-box retailer before. It was once slated for a Bass Pro Shops outlet, a deal that never materialized, The Post and Courier reported.
Weber USA has been developing Ingleside, a 1,500-acre project near I-26 and Highway 78, since about 2008. It includes commercial space, hotels, townhomes and apartments, according to the newspaper.
Costco’s expansion pace
The Charleston-area purchase comes as Costco keeps adding stores. The company operated 939 membership warehouses on Aug. 30, the end of its fiscal year, including 647 in the United States and Puerto Rico, according to its annual report filed Oct. 7 with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
Costco opened 28 warehouses in fiscal 2026, including three relocations, and plans to open up to 33 in fiscal 2027, including five relocations, the report says. The company expects to spend about $7.5 billion on capital expenditures in fiscal 2027.
Net sales rose 10% to $297.2 billion in fiscal 2026, according to the filing. Costco counted 84.1 million paid members at the end of the year, and its basic U.S. membership costs $65 a year. The company employs about 355,000 people worldwide, about 232,000 of them in the United States.
In the same report, Costco told investors that its growth depends in part on its ability to acquire property and build or lease new warehouses, and that it competes with other retailers and businesses for suitable locations.
In North Charleston, it has now secured one.
