A German maker of industrial battery chargers has started production in North Charleston.

IEB Americas Inc. chose Charleston County for its first major production operation in North America, a $1.5 million investment expected to create 30 jobs, the S.C. Department of Commerce announced Aug. 11. Operations are already online, the agency said.

IEB Americas is a subsidiary of Industrie Elektronik Brilon GmbH, which makes industrial battery charging systems and charging technology. The parent company was founded in 1980 and is based in Brilon, Germany, according to the state.

The facility at 4100 Carolina Commerce Parkway will be the company’s American production, warehousing, service and training center. IEB Americas will assemble and test products there for North and South American markets, manage inventory and support customers and business partners, the state said.

“We are bringing our leading energy systems and charging technologies directly to the U.S. market,” IEB CEO Stefan Fiedler said in the announcement.

Will Russell, board chairman of the Charleston Regional Development Alliance, said IEB’s decision “highlights the region’s growing role in supporting the e-mobility and warehouse industries.”

“We are honored to welcome IEB Americas and look forward to the additional power-production capabilities this investment brings to our community,” said Joe Boykin, chairman of Charleston County Council.

The state’s announcement did not mention any incentives for the project. People interested in working for IEB Americas should visit the company’s LinkedIn page, according to the Department of Commerce.
