The PGA Championship is coming back to Kiawah Island.

The PGA of America announced Wednesday that the Ocean Course at Kiawah Island Golf Resort will host the 2031 PGA Championship, scheduled for May of that year. It will be the 113th playing of the championship and the third on the Ocean Course, which hosted it in 2012 and 2021.

The course will become just the ninth to host three or more PGA Championships, according to the announcement.

The PGA of America also awarded the resort the 2029 Girls and Boys Junior PGA Championships, which will be played on the Ocean Course and the resort’s Turtle Point Golf Course.

“We are ecstatic to bring the Junior PGA Championships and PGA Championship to The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island Golf Resort in 2029 and 2031,” said PGA of America President John Lindert.

The course’s “challenging layout and rich history make it an ideal destination for our Championships,” Lindert said.

“We are proud to again be selected as the host course for the 2031 PGA Championship,” said Roger Warren, the resort’s president. He said he was confident the resort’s “partnership with the PGA of America and the local community will produce another world class event.”

The Ocean Course has a long history with the PGA of America. The association also ran the 1991 Ryder Cup, the 2005 PGA Professional Championship and the 2007 Senior PGA Championship there. Rory McIlroy won the 2012 PGA Championship by a record eight strokes, and Phil Mickelson won in 2021 at age 50, becoming the oldest men’s major champion, according to the announcement.

Pete and Alice Dye designed the course from 1989 to 1991. Ten of its holes run along the Atlantic, and the other eight run parallel to them. Golf Digest ranked it 24th on its 2023-24 list of America’s 100 Greatest courses and third among public courses, according to the resort.

The resort sits on 10 miles of beach less than 30 miles south of Charleston. Along with the Ocean Course and four other championship courses, it includes The Sanctuary, a 255-room hotel and spa, and nearly 500 private villas and homes.
