Palmetto Moon started in 2002 as a kiosk selling college fan gear in Charleston’s Citadel Mall. Now it is headed to King Street.
The retailer has signed a lease at 360 King St., in the former Yeti store, The Post and Courier reported. The Yeti store closed earlier this summer, the newspaper said.
“Charleston has been home since 2002, so getting ready to open our doors on King Street feels like one of those pinch-me moments,” the company said in an Aug. 26 announcement quoted by The Post and Courier.
Chief Financial Officer Bernard Powers told What Now on Sept. 1 that the store would open in “late fall of this year, pre-holiday.” The Post and Courier reported plans for an early November opening, and the company’s online store locator lists the shop as coming in October 2026.
“This location is going to have a true downtown Charleston historic character, retaining many of the historic elements of the building,” Powers told What Now.
The chain has grown to more than 50 stores in 10 states, most of them in the Southeast, according to its online store locator. It sells clothing, shoes, home goods, collegiate gear and drinkware, with brands that include Yeti, Simply Southern, Vineyard Vines and Hey Dude, its website says. In the Charleston area, its store locator lists shops at Tanger Outlets and Northwoods Mall in North Charleston, Mount Pleasant Towne Centre and Azalea Square in Summerville.
The company left Citadel Mall in 2018, after 16 years, and moved that store to Tanger Outlets, The Post and Courier reported at the time. It had 18 locations then. Founders Bob and Karen Webster had sold a majority stake in 2016 to Topspin Partners, a New York private equity firm, the newspaper reported.
The King Street shop will be the chain’s first downtown store, according to The Post and Courier.
