A Chevrolet dealership that has sold cars on Savannah Highway in Ravenel since 1990 has a new owner and a new name.

Mason Automotive Group completed its purchase of Marchant Chevrolet from longtime dealer Rob Marchant on Oct. 5, the company announced. The dealership at 5700 Savannah Highway now operates as Ravenel Chevrolet and will continue its Chevrolet sales, service and parts operations, according to Mason. The announcement did not disclose financial terms.

The family-owned group, based in Lugoff in Kershaw County, is led by Mark Mason Sr. and his son, Mark Mason Jr., the dealer principal. Mason Sr. started in the car business in 1979, and the family became dealership owners in 2008, according to the company.

The group lists seven new-vehicle dealerships in Lugoff, Columbia, Ravenel and Rocky Mount, North Carolina, plus two powersports stores. Its brands include Chevrolet, Ford, Toyota, Volkswagen and Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram. The purchase expands the group into the Charleston market, the company said.

“We aren’t coming to Ravenel just to change the sign on the building,” Mason Jr. said in the announcement. “We’re coming here to invest in the dealership, invest in our employees, grow the business and earn the trust of customers throughout Charleston and the Lowcountry.”

The dealership serves customers in Ravenel, Charleston, Johns Island, West Ashley, Mount Pleasant and the surrounding Lowcountry, according to Mason.

Bob Marchant II and his wife, Sonja, bought the former Diamond Chevrolet in Ravenel and opened Marchant Chevrolet in 1990, when it was the only new-car dealer in the rural town, The Post and Courier reported. The family bought Ravenel Ford in 1993 and still owns and operates it, the newspaper reported.

“Rob Marchant and his family have built a tremendous legacy in Ravenel,” Mason Sr. said in the announcement.
