RoadOne IntermodaLogistics has bought Higgins Transport Service LLC, a Charleston company that trucks containers to and from the port, the company announced Aug. 18.

Higgins is a Charleston-based agent of Wall Street Intermodal and provides port drayage and intermodal freight service, according to RoadOne. The deal adds 15 drivers to RoadOne’s Charleston operations. Terms were not disclosed.

Owner Justin Higgins and his team will join RoadOne, Trucking Dive reported.

“When you work in this industry, you quickly learn who the major players are, and RoadOne IntermodaLogistics is a true leader in our space,” Higgins said in the announcement. “Joining their team through this acquisition is an incredible milestone for us.”

RoadOne, based in Randolph, Massachusetts, has more than 2,500 drivers working from more than 100 port, rail and truckload terminals in the U.S., FreightWaves reported. The trade publication said the company is backed by Ridgemont Equity Partners and Nonantum Capital Partners.

The company said it recently opened a 384,000-square-foot facility in Summerville to move, store and distribute goods near the Port of Charleston. Beginning in 2027, it plans to develop a second, 279,700-square-foot warehouse on the property. RoadOne’s website lists the site at 1932 Dawson Branch Road.

RoadOne says it sees “significant long-term growth potential” in the Charleston region because of its deep-water port and fast-growing population. In April, the company named Jim Newsome, a former CEO of the South Carolina Ports Authority, to a new executive advisory board that it said would support its next phase of acquisitions.

“Providing comprehensive, reliable and efficient distribution and logistics services throughout the U.S. is our goal, and we have been particularly focused on expanding our presence in Charleston and throughout the Southeast,” RoadOne Executive Vice President JC Carruthers said in the announcement.
