Mount Pleasant information technology firm eGroup plans to spend $6.3 million on an 18,000-square-foot building at its headquarters and create 35 jobs, the S.C. Department of Commerce announced Thursday. The project would triple the company’s workspace and roughly double its workforce, The Post and Courier reported.
The new building will go up at eGroup’s existing office complex at 482 Wando Park Blvd., near Long Point Road and Interstate 526. The company expects to add the jobs over the next few years to the 38 people it employs now, and to finish construction in 2020, the newspaper reported.
eGroup’s current building has 9,000 square feet. The company bought the property for $1.2 million in 2012.
“We are delighted to welcome the expansion of this innovative IT solutions company in Mount Pleasant,” Mayor Will Haynie said in a statement.
eGroup sells IT modernization services. CEO Mike Carter said its specialists guide clients through digital transformation and help them make use of data centers and the cloud. The company has about 300 clients, most of them in health care, financial services and the public sector, and its customers range across the Carolinas, the Mid-Atlantic and beyond, the newspaper reported.
Carter told the Post and Courier he expects revenue to grow from about $40 million now to $150 million in the next three years or so. The company is hiring.
The 20-year-old company has never done a capital raise, according to the newspaper, and Carter said he has run it through three recessions.
“We treat our customers as our chief investors,” he said.
Carter, a 1992 graduate of The Citadel, founded the company in Charlotte, North Carolina, in 1999. He cited eGroup’s place on Inc. magazine’s 2019 list of best workplaces, where it was the only South Carolina company, according to the newspaper.
The campus sits less than a mile from the new headquarters of the S.C. State Ports Authority, next to the Wando Welch Terminal.
