MUSC Health has held a topping-out ceremony for the MUSC Hollings Cancer Center in Nexton, marking the completion of the building’s highest structural point, the health system said Oct. 22.

The 30,000-square-foot outpatient building in Berkeley County will offer medical and surgical oncology, an infusion suite with an on-site compounding pharmacy, and radiation therapy, according to MUSC. It is expected to open in summer 2027.

It will share a campus with the planned MUSC Health Nexton Medical Center, a 70-bed hospital that MUSC expects to open in summer 2028. The hospital will offer general medicine, general surgery, orthopedics, women’s health and cardiology, along with inpatient and intensive care, MUSC said. Many Berkeley County residents now get inpatient care at MUSC Health facilities elsewhere in the region, according to the health system.

“This topping out marks an important milestone as we bring these new facilities closer to reality for the patients and families who will rely on them,” said Dr. Patrick J. Cawley, CEO of MUSC Health. “We are proud to continue investing in Berkeley County and expanding access to MUSC’s expertise and comprehensive care closer to home.”

The Nexton center will work with the National Cancer Institute-designated Hollings Cancer Center on the Charleston peninsula and with the cancer hospital MUSC plans downtown, the health system said.

MUSC’s plan for a hospital in Nexton goes back to December 2017, when its hospital authority applied for state approval to build one there to ease capacity problems at its downtown hospital, according to a 2024 S.C. Supreme Court opinion. Two competing hospitals challenged the approval. The court upheld it in January 2024.

MUSC’s announcement did not give the cost of the Nexton buildings or name their builders.
