Trident Health has bought 22 acres next to its Moncks Corner Medical Center for $2 million, Todd Gallati, the health system’s president and chief executive, announced Wednesday.

“We have no immediate plans to build on the site,” Gallati said.

The announcement did not say who sold the land or describe its boundaries beyond saying it is adjacent to the medical center.

Moncks Corner Medical Center, in the Berkeley County seat, opened in 1983 and provides emergency care around the clock. More than 14,000 patients have received emergency care there so far this year, according to Trident Health. The center also has an outpatient diagnostic center offering general radiology, mammography and lab services, along with physical rehabilitation.

Trident Health, part of Hospital Corporation of America, describes itself as a 407-bed system. It has two acute care hospitals, Trident Medical Center in North Charleston and Summerville Medical Center, and two freestanding emergency departments, Centre Pointe Emergency in North Charleston and Moncks Corner Medical Center.

The system says it treats more stroke and heart attack patients in the tri-county area than any other provider, and that it performs more robotic surgeries and cares for more children in its emergency rooms than any other.

Its main hospital has more construction ahead. Trident Medical Center is scheduled to begin a $13.5 million expansion of its emergency department and operating rooms in mid-January, according to the announcement.
